Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist. The following medications will help to treat it.

Actonel
This medicine is a bisphosphonate used to prevent and treat osteoporosis that occurs after menopause. It may also be used to treat Paget's disease, steroid-induced osteoporosis, and other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Evista
Evista alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body. It reduces loss of bone tissue. Although studies are not complete, Evista appears to work without increasing the risk of breast or uterine cancer.

Fosamax
Fosamax reduces calcium loss from bones. It helps prevent bone loss and increases production of normal healthy bone in patients with Paget's disease, osteoporosis, and other conditions which place someone at risk for bone loss, including after menopause in females or from the long-term use of corticosteroids (like prednisone) in men or women. Generic Fosamax tablets are not yet available.
