Respiratory Inability of the lungs to perform their basic task of gas exchange, the transfer of oxygen from inhaled air into the blood and the transfer of carbon dioxide from the blood into exhaled air. The basis of respiratory failure may be failure of the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs; failure of the muscles required to expand the lungs; or failure of the brain centers controlling respiration.

	Accolate
	Accolate is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for the prevention and long term treatment of asthma in patients 5 years of age and older. Accolate may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Advair
	This product is a combination "controller" medicine for long-term treatment of asthma and chronic lung diseases (such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or COPD). It works to open the airways of the lungs in two ways (decreasing bronchiolar swelling and causing muscle relaxation). It may also be used to treat other breathing conditions as determined by your doctor. This medicine does not work immediately and should not be used for acute asthma attacks. Use other "quick-relief" medicines/inhalers for sudden shortness of breath or asthma attacks.

	Atrovent
	This medicine is an anticholinergic agent used to prevent the symptoms of emphysema or chronic bronchitis. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Beclovent
	Beclovent is a corticosteroid used to treat asthma. Beclovent is also used to prevent asthma attacks. IT WILL NOT STOP an asthma attack once one has started. Beclovent may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Combivent
	Combivent is a bronchodilator and a beta receptor stimulant combination used to treat or prevent symptoms of asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or other breathing conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Flovent
	Flovent HFA is a corticosteroid used to treat asthma. Flovent HFA is also used to prevent asthma attacks. IT WILL NOT STOP an asthma attack once one has started. Flovent HFA may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Pulmicort
	This medicine is a corticosteroid used to prevent bronchial asthma. It is not used to relieve an asthma attack. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Serevent
	Serevent Diskus is a beta receptor stimulant used to prevent or minimize problems in persons with breathing difficulties including asthma and chronic obstructive disorders of the lungs such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Serevent Diskus works by opening the air passages in the lungs to improve breathing. IT WILL NOT STOP an asthma attack once one has started. Salmeterol is generally combined with another effective controller-type asthma medicine (such as an inhaled corticosteroid). Serevent Diskus may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Spiriva
	Spiriva HandiHaler is an anticholinergic agent used to treat the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, in adults. Spiriva HandiHaler is inhaled into the lungs where it enlarges your airways to allow you to breathe easier. Spiriva HandiHaler may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Uniphyl
	Uniphyl is a bronchodilator used to treat the symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Uniphyl may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Ventolin
	This medicine is a bronchodilator used to treat or prevent the symptoms of asthma, emphysema, and other breathing conditions. This medicine is also used to prevent the symptoms of exercise-induced asthma. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Volmax
	Volmax is a bronchodilator used to treat or prevent the symptoms of asthma, emphysema, and other breathing conditions. Volmax may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

	Zaditen
	Ketotifen (kee-toe-TYE-fen ) is a type of asthma medication which, when taken every day and used along with other antiasthma medications, may reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma symptoms or attacks in children. It may also lead to a reduction in daily requirements of other antiasthma medications. Ketotifen is not effective for the prevention or treatment of acute asthma attacks. Ketotifen works by inhibiting certain substances in the body that are known to cause inflammation and symptoms of asthma.
